Australian Labradoodles

All of the boys in the family have wanted a dog - some of them for as long as 40 years ;-) But because one of our kids is allergic to dogs we held off. My husband started doing research and found out there are dogs that don't shed and have worked well for families with dog allergies.

So instead of a family vacation this year we are getting a puppy come fall. It will be the gift that keeps on giving (and I will remind the boys of that when it's time to take the puppy out for bathroom runs and walks or if the backyard needs to be scooped). We are going to be getting a multi-generational Labradoodle from Log Cabin Labradoodles. Multi-generational labradoodles are known to be good for people with dog allergies. The first Labradoodle was bred in Australia to be a service dog to a blind woman who was allergic to dogs. The idea is that they get the poodle coat, which is a non-shedding kind of coat. I think the lab mix is there for temperament. The breeder we're working with - Patty Barnes - has been wonderful about understanding the special circumstances of our family in that one child has autism and one is allergic, and steering us to a litter she thinks will work well for our family in terms of coat and temperament. Here are the possible parents of our puppy - both of the parents are known to have fairly calm dispositions.

I was recently talking to a couple of non-dog people and their eyes widened at the idea that people would pay to get a dog. It will be an adventure for our family, that's for sure!

If you're wondering why I haven't posted about art I was away on vacation and I have been focusing on getting back into my domestic engineer routine as well as scanning old family photos and working on genealogy. But soon I will have a work in progress to share. Keep stopping by!
