Isn't this a hilarious entry from an 1836 Bangor paper? If only it were so easy. I was doing some research on ancestry.com and found some old Bangor Whig & Courier papers had been scanned. This is an old newspaper from the 1800's. The scanned entry above is from that paper, as well as the following quote:
"A nimble sixpence is worth a slow shilling."
William Clark, from his Power Up Proverbs blog states,
"This is an old English proverb. The sixpence and shilling are UK coins from pre-decimalisation days. A sixpence (known as a "tanner") was worth half of a shilling (a "bob"). This proverb is telling us that a shopkeeper turning over a lot of small items can do better than when selling a few more pricey ones."
Sometimes I need to remind myself of this. I love making really involved things but I can get stuck there for quite a while. So I need to find some "nimble sixpence" items to work on when I need a break from the shilling item .
