My antiquing friend and I have been enjoying going to Houston Brooks auction previews lately and sometimes leaving bids. This is for me what golf is to my husband. Just pure fun. Here is a screen shot of this week's offerings. Oh, the choices!!!!
My new rule for auction purchases is items must be usable and presentable as is. I can always improve, but if I don't get round to it, then as is must be fine. Also, I don't buy electrical gadgets.
I digress. Here is the point of today's post. On the ride to the auction preview, we talk about life and raising kids, etc. Last time we discussed how to help our kids choose a career path. My friend told her daughter:
"Choose something as a career
that makes you excited to get up in the morning."
Life doesn't always allow for this, it's true. But there are points in life where you have more choices open to you, such as graduating from high school.
Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, says, "You can choose what you DO, but you can't choose what you LIKE."
What do you naturally enjoy doing? We can't always make a career out of our hobbies, but on the other hand, we also can't make ourselves into physicists if we hate math and science. Sometimes people choose things to do based on what they think they ought to do. I started off in engineering (what was I thinking?) switched to business (again, what was I thinking?) and finally settled on teaching which had some overlap with my natural skills and interest.
So what the heck does this have to do with my own 31 Days of Focus? It's that I need to not drag home projects from the auction that need lots of time and attention. Because I want that to go to my own work.

Wholeheartedly agree. It's not always possible to do for a living what you love to do for fun, but if you can start out at least in that general direction, your chances are whole lot better.
